The short answer: For most everyday flash cards, we recommend 199 to 271 gsm cardstock. Choose 163 gsm when you need a large quantity at a lower cost. Choose 271 gsm when the cards will be shuffled, handled frequently, or reused for months. Heavier 325 gsm cards are best reserved for specialized uses where maximum rigidity matters.

The thickest card is not automatically the best card.

Students who create hundreds of flash cards may be better served by a lighter stock because it costs less, weighs less, and takes up less space. A heavier card becomes more valuable when it will be shuffled frequently, reused for months, handled by several people, or used in a professional setting.

Why paper labels get confusing

GSM is more useful than comparing pound ratings alone.

A pound rating such as 90 lb or 110 lb does not tell the complete story because paper categories use different basis-sheet sizes. That means 90 lb index and 90 lb cover are not automatically the same thickness or weight.

GSM means grams per square meter. It provides a consistent way to compare the physical weight of papers from different categories. Caliper, finish, fiber, and coating can still affect how two papers feel, but GSM gives buyers a much clearer starting point.
